A study published in the American Heart Journal assessed the link between mean right atrial and mean pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and evaluated the clinical significance in a broad population of patients undergoing invasive right heart catheterization. The results demonstrated that the mean right atrial and pulmonary capillary wedge pressures correlated moderately well in patients undergoing right catheterization for diverse indications. However, a discordance was seen in a sizable minority, in whom assessment of left-sided filling pressures using estimated jugular venous pressure seemed to be misleading. Elevated right atrial pressure was reported to be a marker for in-hospital mortality.
